Fall 2008 CalPac meeting in San Diego:

Fire Recovery and Landscape Change in Southern California

The Fall Technical Meeting will focus on wildfire and vegetation recovery in Southern California. San Diego County is home to a unique flora and a shifting mosaic of vegetation types. This landscape experienced enormous firestorms in both 2003 and 2007, burning large percentages of the county. The Fall meeting will examine the changing role of fire in this region, the effects of increasing fire frequency. As Range Managers in California we can expect that managing in preparation and response to wildfire will be an issue of increasing importance in our professional lives.

The field tour will visit locations in the county with different fire histories to look at fire recovery and the possibility that many areas are type converting. In addition, we will visit Laguna Meadow on the Cleveland National Forest– one of the southernmost montane meadows in the state – where grazing, endangered species, increasing recreation and fire/fuels reduction present many management challenges.
