RESOURCE ANALYST
Vegetation/Range Management
($4,910 - $5,338/month with excellent benefits)

The East Bay Regional Park District is seeking to fill this one vacancy.  Under the direction of the Wildland Vegetation Program Manager, the Resource Analyst will oversee the mapping and maintenance of the District’s grazing infrastructure and fuel management program. The Resource Analyst will assist in monitoring and mapping other aspects of the Wildland Vegetation Management program including but not limited to grazing units, range productivity, fuel management projects, and grazing pressure surveys. A Bachelors degree or course work/experience in Range Management is highly desirable.

Minimum Qualifications:  A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university, with major work in the discipline related to prospective duties; and one year of experience performing difficult research or work in any one of the fields related to the prospective duties.

License:  A valid California State Driver’s License is a condition of initial and continued employment for this classification.

About the Position: The Resource Specialist I – Rangeland Ecologist position is an entry-level, non-exempt professional position responsible for performing a wide range of activities in support of the management, enhancement and protection of the District’s natural resources. General responsibilities of this position will be to conduct literature searches, field observations and studies to analyze and assess the status of natural and cultural resources; write detailed technical summaries and reports for District staff and the public; prepare grant applications; manage consultants and contractors; and assist in the development and implementation of resource management projects. Specific responsibilities of this position will be to implement grazing management plans; manage grazing, agricultural leases and infrastructure improvements; monitor rangelands; and perform miscellaneous tasks associated with conservation grazing and agricultural lease operations on public lands. The Resource Specialist I will function within a team environment involving staff from the Operations, Planning and Real Property Departments. Possession of or ability to obtain certification from the California-Pacific Section of the Society for Range Management is highly desired.

Basic Requirements: Knowledge of basic principles and practices of ecology, wildlife, vegetation, soils and rangeland management. BS/BA degree in ecology, biology, earth sciences, rangeland management or other closely related subject; in addition, one year experience in evaluating, surveying or monitoring grazing operations and natural resource management. An AA degree in a relevant field and an additional two years of progressive related experience may be substituted for the bachelors’ degree requirement. Knowledge of conservation grazing, rangeland management and agricultural practices, monitoring techniques, resource protection and basic methods and techniques of research, analysis and report writing. Ability to address the balance between conservation science and practical matters of ranch and farm operations. Requires excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills as well as a commitment to the principles of diversity and multi-culturalism. Possession of a Valid California driver’s license.

Working Conditions: Work will occur in both a field and office environment including travel from site to site, and field data collection. Routinely sitting for prolonged periods of time; extensive use of computer; when conducting field assignments, may traverse rough, difficult terrain in inclement weather with exposure to poison oak. May require occasional weekend work.

About the District: Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District is an independent special district created by the voters of northwestern Santa Clara County in 1972, joined in 1976 by southern San Mateo County, and most recently expanded to the San Mateo coast side in 2004. The District’s purpose is “To acquire and preserve a regional greenbelt of open space land in perpetuity; protect and restore the natural environment; and provide opportunities for ecologically sensitive public enjoyment and education.” The District owns and manages over 55,000 acres of land in 26 open space preserves. Activities on the open space preserves include hiking, cycling, horseback riding, picnicking, jogging and nature study.

Position: Rangeland/Botanical Field Technician        Date: 3/7/2008

Tierra Data Inc., a small, progressive natural resources and environmental planning firm based in Escondido, California, has an immediate opening for a Rangeland/Botanical Field Technician Opportunity. Temporary for 6 months. Long-term monitoring plots for National Rangeland Inventory (Natural Resources Conservation Service [NRCS]) and other monitoring plots in Southern California counties, San Clemente Island.

Excellent botanical skills.
Understanding of soils helpful.

Position: Staff Ecologist         Date: 3/7/2008

Tierra Data Inc., a small, progressive natural resources and environmental planning firm based in Escondido, California, has an immediate opening for a Masters Degree-level candidate in rangeland ecology, wildlife ecology, plant ecology, or a related field. May consider a B.S. with suitable experience. Duties include authoring/co-authoring natural resources management plans, environmental assessments, and biological assessments, conducting research and synthesis of scientific literature, leading or supporting field reconnaissance surveys such as vegetation monitoring and threatened and endangered species surveys, and scientific report writing. Resources management plans are commonly located on military bases in the region. Candidates must have demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as work successfully on a team. Superior communication skills, verbal and written, are needed. Familiarity with database and spreadsheet applications (Access, Excel) necessary. GIS and GPS experience a plus.
