ALOHA E KOMO MAIThe planning for the 2001 Annual Meeting, A Range Odyssey, is on track for a truly unique and outstanding meeting. We have organized the meeting around three beautiful resorts which overlook the Pacific Ocean along the Kona Coast of the Big Island. The California Sections encourages you to attend the meeting in this spectacular setting, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii next February (17th - 23rd)Most of our activities will be conducted at the Aston Keauhou Beach Resort and the King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. The Royal Kona Resort will also contribute to meeting our room needs. We will operate a shuttle bus service between the three resorts and the Keauhou Shopping Center, Sunday through Wednesday. The Aston Keauhou Beach Resort, a 10 acre oceanfront resort, is providing all of its rooms for SRM. We are excited about gaining exclusive use of the resort for our annual meeting. Besides affording privacy, it will make possible some special lunch and dinner arrangements and it assures full use of the hotel’s beautiful gardens and outdoor facilities. The Aston is situated adjacent to Kahaluu Beach Park which has a great snorkeling lagoon and white sand beach, 3 miles from the village of Kailua-Kona. The resort features numerous sacred Hawaiian sites, including a replica of King David Kalakaua’s private vacation cottage, his cleansing pond, and several heiau (places of worship or temples). The Aston is the student preferred lodging hotel with quad room rates specifically contracted for student groups. King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel is located in the village of Kailua-Kona. It is situated on a white sand beach which was once a favorite spot for vacationing among Hawaiian royalty. On its grounds lies the Heiau (temple) of King Kamehameha the Great. The hotel is noted for preserving the culture of Hawaii, and it’s lobby contains many artifacts and paintings of royal Hawaiian families. It will serve as the location many events, including our luau. We have replaced the traditional banquet with an Hawaiian luau and concert featuring a Hawaiian slack-key guitar Legend. The Royal Kona Resort overlooks spectacular Kailua Bay, just steps from the village of Kailua-Kona and its many restaurants, shops and attractions. It is known for it’s stunning architecture and Hawaiian ambience. It’s primary role in our meeting is provision of sleeping rooms, although some committee meetings and special events may be accommodated there. The professional program of posters, trade show, technical presentations, and six symposia will be extremely interesting. Symposia topics which have been accepted include: the role of fire in ecological restoration; ecosystem simplification (or why a patchwork quilt is more valuable than a burlap sack); noxious weeds - a global rangeland crisis; land restoration sucess and sustainability; the ecology and management of sage grouse populations; and many more. Our companion events are diverse and unique. They feature snorkeling trips, Hawaiian cultural tours, sunset cruises, Parker Ranch historical tour, deep sea fishing, and other activities. They will be offered at multiple times to provide companions and families the opportunity to participate. The Hawaiian Ranches Technical Tour will visit several working ranches, featuring differing grazing management objectives, in the areas of Waimea (Kamuela) and along Highway 250 of the Kohala Mountains. Tour participants will view a wide variety of vegetation life zones (7) with annual precipitation ranging from less than 10 inches to greater than 100 inches. The Volcano Ecosystem Tour will take participants around the South Point of Hawaii, where the ancients first arrived, on to the Kilauea Iki Crater with lunch at the Volcano House, and then a return drive via the Highway 19 between Mauna Kea Volcano and the Kohala Mountains with a stop at Akaka Falls State Park. This will be a great opportunity to visit the Big Island of Hawaii, enjoy the many events planned for this meeting, and see some very interesting landscapes. On the accomodations link below are three resort room reservation forms. Please complete one and send directly to the resort of your choice. Information about condominiums will be available at a later date. Car rental is encouraged as there are many things to see and do on the Big Island. Airlines and car rental arrangements have been completed by the SRM office. Contact the headquarters office for details. Mike Connor and Bill Frost
